You love your lab puppy like a member of your own family, so harsh training methods might be out of the question for you and your pooch. Stay in control as you reward your dog’s good behavior. When your lab does commands correctly, they get a treat. This will help to excite your puppy and leave you in complete control. Stay calm and expect the same from your puppy.
If you encounter a dog with whom you are not acquainted, you should do so slowly and with the back of a hand outstretched. This gives a dog a chance to become familiar with your personal scent, which engenders trust. Once a dog recognizes your particular scent, he will be unafraid and willing to obey.
Stay very consistent and persistent when starting your crate training regimen. When he comes out of the crate, you must immediately allow him to relieve himself in an appropriate place. As time passes, your puppy will start to be able to use the restroom at the appropriate times.
Practice patience when you are training your dog. This will cause you not to be frustrated and angry with your dog during this process. Remember that dogs really want to please their owners, but they got confused because we speak a different language that they do not understand.
Lab Puppy
You indicate that jumping up is an unacceptable behavior by grabbing the dogs paws, squeezing gently and guiding them back down to the ground. If done lightly, it won’t hurt the dog, but it’ll make them uncomfortable. In time, they will cease jumping on humans, as they will have the negative association with the squeezing.
Training a lab puppy to roll over is a pretty simple task, just make sure to have a few treats handy! First, make sure the lab puppy is in a laying position. Now, with a treat in your palm, move your hand from one side of the dog’s face to the other. Ideally, your Labrador puppy will use his nose to follow the treat, rolling his whole body in the process. Whenever your puppy does actually roll over, say “roll over” out loud. Repeating this over time forms a mental association in your dog’s mind that eventually causes him to roll over on command. It will probably take multiple attempts, but you will be the talk of the town when the trick is learned.
Call your pooch by his name to keep his attention focused on you. When you first get a dog it is important to say his name often, so that he will associate it to himself and will be more apt to pay attention to you when you call it. Put some thought into your dogs name, and choose one that isn’t too long and that isn’t too similar to other common words.
Shock collars are not a good idea. They often don’t function as well as advertised and are far more expensive than conventional training methods. Plus, shock collars can discourage your lab puppy from behaving properly. These methods yield negative results.
When housebreaking your puppy, accidents will happen. Immediately clean up every accident for training purposes. If you don’t clean accidents up quickly, your pet may smell the mess and eliminate in the same spot again. There are a number of products that will get rid if the smell. Look for them at your favorite pet store.
Don’t approach a strange Labrador puppy too quickly. Hold our your hand and slowly move closer. As you do this, you give the lab puppy an opportunity to acclimate to your scent and become used to your presence. The lab will no longer be afraid after he is able to recongnize the scent and may begin to follow commands.
When your dog is displaying unwanted behaviors, use water to spray him. This will teach your dog that there are certain behaviors that are unacceptable. Soon your dog will stop these behaviors and you’ll have a playful yet obedient dog.

Make Crate Training a Positive Experience
Crate training a puppy can simplify the tasks of training and housebreaking your puppy. Puppies can create an incredible amount of mischief in very little time simply out of curiosity. Using a crate to restrict her movements is the best way to limit the amount of destruction any self-respecting pup can wreck on a home.
Because Sophie is allowed to play in her crate with her own toys, she cannot be looking for trouble all over the house, and as a result there is much less cause for punishment. But even when she does get loose and creates havoc, resist the urge to put her back in her crate to punish her.
The sooner Sophie associates that crate with her lair and a positive experience, the sooner she will start going there of her own accord. Think of a crate as the equivalent of a child having her very own bedroom: a haven from a sometimes hostile world where she can relax and enjoy peace and quiet.
Why a Pup Needs a Crate
Just like a dog will seek refuge under a table or a desk during a storm, a crate represents protection to a small dog simply because its size is in better proportion to the puppy. Putting Sophie in a crate is also a good way to protect other pets and allow them to get used to each other’s scents without any mishap.
That is why, when first bringing puppy home, a crate is one of the most important furnishings you can get for your new friend. It ranks right up there with the bed, the toys, and the food. Crates are also great for travelling, ensuring your puppy does not get lost or hurt in case of an accident.
Crate Training Hints to Help Along
Don’t just dump poor Sophie into her new crate and close the door though, because you will end up spooking her. A light touch is required here: throw all her toys in together with a few treats and let her explore at will. Put her bowl just inside the crate at meal time to help her get used to it. Only when she is comfortable being in her crate should you close the door.
One word of warning, though: make certain you remove Sophie’s collar before you put her in her crate. Puppies can get their collars caught in the bars and die of strangulation. It will help to locate Sophie’s crate in an area where she can observe your whereabouts during the day and feel part of the family.
At night, proximity to your bed will allow her to see, smell, and hear you and reassure that all is well with her world. You will also be able to hear her if she needs to go potty, lucky you! Remember that puppies should never be crated for more hours than their age in months, plus one. In other words, a four-month old pup should spend no longer than five hours at a time in its crate. And don’t forget to follow my training schedule!
One last word: remember that the time Sophie spends in her crate is no substitution for the quality time she needs to spend with you. Crate training a puppy can be demanding, but don’t forget that bonding and socialization are vital at this stage of her life so she will grow into a well-adjusted, confident dog.

Training your dog can feel like a constant game of tug of war, and half the time the dog is winning. Successfully training your dog can be challenging but very rewarding. This article will help guide you to a better relationship with your pet by offering a variety of training tips for your pet.
You will want to use your pet’s name to get his or her attention. Use your dog’s name when calling to go for a walk, for meal times, and for play. This will teach your dog to pay attention when you say their name. Never punish a dog for coming to you when you call them.

Training your puppy should start as early as 6 weeks old. The earlier you can start training your new pup, the better the results will be. Studies have found that dogs are the most receptive to training from 6 to 14 weeks old so use that time wisely.
It is a simple task to teach a dog how to roll over, just be sure to keep some dog treats handy! The first step is to get the dog to lay down. Then, put a treat close to the floor near the side of the dog’s head, and gradually raise it over its head to the opposite side. He’ll follow your hand and roll over completely. Upon seeing him roll over, issue the command. You can then repeat the command to the point where he rolls over without the added incentive of a treat. It may take some time for your dog to perfect the trick, but it’s a popular move and one that is sure to impress others.
Make sure you and your family are consistent with your commands. If one person uses “down” to tell the dog to get off the couch while another says “off” and a third is letting him lay there, the dog is going to get mixed signals. It makes it much more difficult for him to learn the commands.
To keep your dog from barking while you aren’t home, you need to make him think you can appear at any moment. This will take some time on your part. Pretend to leave the house, but stay outside until the barking starts. Then open the door and deliver a stern “No!” This will make your dog think you are all-seeing and all-hearing. A few sessions of this technique, and you’ll train your dog to keep it quiet.

Is trying to control your puppy barking getting a bit of a pain when all you want to do is get a decent sleep, leave your dog for 5 minutes, or have some respected guests round without having to get the earplugs out?
Training your puppy to stop barking doesn’t have to be stressful, no one likes the loud barking sound coming from your dog, especially at 3 in the morning so lets go through some tips to control dog barking.
1. Need Attention huh?
Don’t give your puppy the attention he wants from barking at you. if I was getting everything I wanted just for barking would probably do it too. You’ve got to teach your puppy that barking won’t get him anywhere. If he wants something wait till he has stopped barking first.
2. Time to bark yet?
If your puppy barks when you leave the house, 8 times out of 10 it will be because you’re making to much fuss over them when you leave. Dogs can’t fully grasp the idea of saying goodbye and may find it upsetting when you give them cuddles and play then go out the door and leave for 8 hours while you’re in work. For a dog that’s a good enough reason to bark and howl the house down for you to come back and play. Try leaving the house without any fuss, Leave the house without drawing any attention to yourself and the barking will lessen and stop.
3. Bored with nothing to do!
puppies enjoy barking, it’s something they like to do. The barking sound might not be completely to your taste but dogs enjoy it and it’s a completely natural thing for them, so if your dog has nothing to do in his spare time then barking passes the time like nothing else. Keep your dog busy with lots of exciting toys if he seems to bark a lot at night, something to chew and play with when you’re not around will help comfort the dog and keep him from barking and waking the neighbours. With nothing else to do your dog will bark through the night until you wake up.
4. Visitor time
When visitors come round it’s an exciting time for your dog, new faces, new smells and more attention than usual. This often causes puppies to bark, they want all the attention they can get in the form of cuddles and play time. You can solve this by using the ‘Stop’ command, teach him this and praise him when he listens to you and you should have no more problems with your over excited dog.
5. Be Consistent
Unfamiliarity can trigger your puppy barking off a lot of the time so keep constant with the times he barks most, for a lot of dog owners this is at night time. Decide where your dog or puppy sleeps. If one night your dog is out in the cold and the next he’s all snug and warm in bed with you or your kids you can guarantee he won’t want to be back out in the cold getting no attention from anyone again. Stick to consistency with your dog and you won’t go far wrong, otherwise you may be in for another sleepless night shouting at your dog.

Dogs are not as intelligent as humans, therefore they should not be treated as such. Thinking otherwise can leave you sadly disappointed. You will need to know how to treat your lab in the right manner so you can do some training.
When you are working on crate training with your new dog or puppy, always take steps to let them know it’s their home. To help your puppy feel at home, place your puppy’s food dish inside the crate. This will help the dog make a positive association between the food and the crate.
Do not reinforce any negative behaviors accidentally. Do not pay attention to your lab or pet it if he does something you are not happy about. If you wish to keep your lab from begging for table scraps, don’t encourage him by slipping him a morsel one night or allowing others to do so.
Get your dog into a feeding routine. You can set a firm schedule by teaching the dog to anticipate that the food will be removed within 10 to 15 minutes of the start of mealtime. Your dog will soon become accustomed to his feeding schedule and eat quickly.

If you do not want your canine friend chewing up all your possessions when you are not home, just keep them outside. If this does not work for you, then close interior doors to rooms with tempting items, and provide plenty of chew toys for your dog.
If you’re taking your Labrador puppy on a trip, take all of his gear with you. Items like food and water bowls, bathroom bags and paper towels are important in having a very relaxing ride. Do not fret about food for your puppy, you can buy it wherever you are.
When you begin training your dog, you should be aware of what his favorite foods are. Giving your dog treats which he really enjoys when he does something right can speed up the training process. Try a variety of treats and pay close attention to your pet’s responses to narrow in on his favorite.
