Fitting a Puppy Collar

Fitting a Puppy collar – What you need to Know

You have decided on what type of collar you want to buy for your new Labrador puppy but what size will you need and how do you go about fitting a puppy collar.

So firstly you need to buy the right size, because your puppy will not be able to go with you to get the collar this is what you need to do. This will probably turn into a game so you might need some help.

Find a tape measure and then measure your puppies neck, once you have the measurement  add on two to three inches.

This is the size of the puppy collar you will need to buy.

When you have the collar put it on your puppy. I remember the first time I put Lorreta’s collar on, she really didn’t like it and kept looking round to see what was on her neck but after 30 minutes it didn’t seem to bother her any more. You might want some one to sit next to you when you are doing this for the first time.  It’s a good idea to get a favourite toy so your puppy is distracted and will not notice what you are doing. The sooner you start putting its collar on the better, it wont take long before it will realise collar on walkies are on there way.

When you have put the puppy collar on you should be able to fit two fingers in between the puppy’s neck and the collar.  This holds true all the way through your dog’s life.

If  the puppy collar is to loose, you run the risk of your puppy being able to get out of it, also  loose collar is  a danger to your puppy, they can easily get snagged on objects, and many puppies die every year from accidental hanging. Your puppy should never wear it’s collar in it’s Lab Puppy crate or Lab Puppy Cage.

If the puppy collar is to tight this will restrict your puppies breathing  and can cause it to cough.

Check your puppies collar on a regular basis it’s surprising how quickly they grow.

So to recap when fitting a puppy collar make sure as I said before you can  fit two fingers in between the puppy’s neck and the collar.

I hope this helps.
