How Much Should My 8 week old puppy eat? (and more!)?
Hi all!
My name is Sam and I just adopted an 8 week old Lab/Terrier/who knows what else puppy from an animal shelter.
The animal shelter gave me lots of instructions, but I have a few questions that I keep googling or asking people about, and I hear 10 different answers! I was wondering if you guys could help me, because I’m pretty overwhelmed.
1) Franny is 8 weeks old and is very skinny (they said she got there malnourished). She is 6 pounds and will probably get to be about 40 pounds.
How much should I feed her??! The shelter said to feed 1 cup of dry food and 1 cup of wet food over the course of a day (about 4 times), but a lot of people are telling me to: a) follow the dog food bag, or b) that 1 can of wet food is a lot and to increase the dry and give her much much less wet. I don’t know what to do! I just want to give her the right amount and I don’t want her to be hungry since she is just a baby and seems so hungry! Any thoughts?
2) She can’t go for real walks because she has a little upper respiratory infection and hasn’t had all her shots. We are house training her. Is it okay to take her (hold her) around the neighborhood, and maybe put her on pavement every once in a while to get used to outside, as long as she doesn’t have contact with other dogs or animals?
3) She is really sweet, but for the first time today she snarled at me when I put my hand near her dog bone. This should be corrected right? I’m assuming I say no and take away the bone each time she does it, but I want to make sure.
That’s it. I know this was a mouthful…if anyone could help me out with any of these questions I would REALLY appreciate it!
Thanks a ton everybody!

you should probabably follow the shelter’s instructions, and you should dfinately correct the snarling prob.
follow the bag i give my dog puppy chow and hes very healthy and i go by the bag
I have a puppy too, and i feed him half a cup of dry food in the morning, at lunch and around dinner (hes only going to grow to be 4lbs tho)
If your dog is a medium size dog, try to steer away from wet food because her teeth won’t develop properly. Not saying you can’t feed her wet food but eventually try to stick only to solid food. The food i would recommend is Acaina (I think that’s how its spelled). Its really healthy and doesnt contain pieces of mystery meat! But feed her one cup at breakfast, lunch and dinner. If she eats it all great. But don’t refill the bowl until its all gone!
As for the walks, she’s probably nervous. Its okay to hold her while you walk around the neighborhood to get her used to it but even if when you took her outside to go pee, put the leash on and walk her to where she has to go pee, to show her the leash is ok. AND your dog should be getting as much social interaction with other animals as it can at an early age!
If she snarls when you put your hand close to her food dont take the food away. Let her have it to show her that you’re not trying to steal it from her. If she was malnourished chances are she’s very protective over her food. But dont stick your hand in to grab her food, use something else like a ruler in case she does bite it. But every once in a while try to take the food from her but give it right back.
i really hope this helped!
