How do you train a puppy to stop running toward people and other dogs?
We have a 5-month-old black lab who has been very easy to train (sit, stay, down, come) and heel on the leash. We like to take her into the woods, where we can let her off the leash to run with our older dog. However, as soon as she sees other people or dogs, even a quarter-mile away, she sprints toward them, and there’s nothing we’ve tried that will even slow her down. Most people and dogs are happy to see her and she’s very friendly with them, but we anticipate problems with aggressive dogs and/or frightened children. Any suggestions?
Thanks.

Teach him to come when called. To be reliable this must be done without distractions initially and then on a long drop lead (usually you can find one of nylon or cotton webbing at pet supply stores) that you can step on when he starts to bolt. Eventually he should be doing a reliable recall that may actually save his life someday. Good luck.
sorry – i see he is a she. my apologies.
She is a pup, let her be a pup and with time she will grow out of it. If you are concerned about aggressive dogs, then keep your pup leashed.
Try to really work on “come,” it’s the only thing I can think of.
My dog does the same thing– but then she’ll lay on her back by their feet and start wagging her tail because she wants to be pet!!!
Really really work on saying ‘come’ at home and giving a reward EVERY time, that way when she runs, you can say ‘come’ and they’ll listen.
i would keep her on her leash at all times if there is a chance of other people being around. if and when she tries to charge toward them, jerk her leash back…hard and give her a stop command (whatever you choose). it may sound bad but after a couple of times, she’ll get the hint and know that it is not allowed.
Yes… put the leash back on until she realizes what you want.
well what my fam. did when my dogs did that was we kept them on a leash and kind of held it loose and have a longer leash so it seemed somewhat that he wasn’t on one at all. and every time he started running we stopped him and told him no or every time he starts to run just call him back to you
if that would work anyway doubt it will help much but its something anyways hope it helps
