Leash Training a Puppy – Puppy not Walking

When Leash Training a Puppy you might find your Puppy not Walking. Yes it does happen, and when it does I think this is a much harder habit to break  than your puppy pulling on lead.

Your puppy has had all it’s vaccinations so it’s time to take him into the big wide world. This can be overwhelming for your puppy he might become nervous and put on the brakes. The other thing that might happen is there are so many interesting smells that he comes across that he will not want to go anywhere he will just want to stand and smell everything.

If this happens to you, then you need to be more exciting than the smells around him and this will also take your puppies mind off the big wild world around him.

  • Forget about trying to get your puppy to walk well on the lead for now, we just want to get used to being in these new surroundings. Have a game with your puppy, get him to focus on one of his Labrador puppy toys.
  • Without interrupting your game, walk forward a few paces, and encourage your puppy to follow the toy.
  • When your pup is in the right position use the “Heel” command, and then praise him. Then play for a few more moments then set off again.
  • Keep working on this and you will build up a positive response to the lead. Try some turns and change the speed to keep your new lab puppy interested.
