Puppy Training Chewing

Puppy Training Chewing the Key to stopping it.

Puppy Training Chewing is one of the problems that new Lab puppy owners have. With all puppy training it will take time to train your puppy to stop chewing but it you follow a few simple rules we will stop this puppy chewing problem.

Firstly I found this video it’s only 2 minutes long but it is very informative.

Train Your Puppy Not to Chew — powered by eHow.com

So lets go through some steps.

Firstly what is your puppy chewing. If he is chewing shoes, slippers, remote controls and anything else that he happens to find lying around then you will need to put them away and out of reach. These items are far to tempting for a puppy. Just think of it as a big box of chocolates, the lid is open and every time you walk passed you just have to have just one, shoes etc are just as yummy to your puppy.

My friend has a Basset puppy and his favourite thing to chew was her sons favourite soft toy. Every time it was left all alone, the puppy would find it and have a good chew, he was told off. Your puppy will not know the difference between which toys are his and anyone else’s.

Lesson 1 in Puppy training Chewing

Put things away in a safe place if you don’t want your puppy chewing on them.

Some things can’t be moved,so we need to teach are new lab puppy to leave it alone.

So the next step in Puppy Training Chewing is distracting.

So to do this simply make a loud noise, so he drops it and then replace the shoe or whatever object he has with something appropriate like a chew toy.

Top Tip: To make a load noise get a can and fill it with pennies, give it a good shake and the puppy wont like it, another technique is to drop a heavy book on the floor.

Your puppy will stop what he is  doing , then call him to you, coming to you is a good thing and give him a chew toy to chew on instead.

Another friend of mine has a puppy that loves to chew on wood, in her sun room the puppy has chewed away at her shirting board, the only effective way to stop this is with a puppy chewing spray, the best selling spray is called Bitter Apple Spray.

Bitter Apple is a non-toxic, safe and effective chew deterrent. It has a bitter taste to discourage puppies from licking, gnawing and chewing on surfaces where it is applied. This was the perfect solution and her puppy stopped chewing on the shirting board after that.

The last part is if you go out and come back to find that you Lab puppy has destroyed the furniture, please don’t shout at it, it’s not your Lab puppies fault, I hate to say this it’s yours. Please buy a Lab puppy crate or Lab puppy cage so your  puppy is safe and so is your furniture.Or shut him away in a room where he can not do or come to any harm.
