Cary Benjamin asked:

Did you know that by not teaching your dog to bite he can become an aggressive monster towards others even yourself? It’s true. Dogs are a great companion to have around the house and a guardian for the family, however biting habits are one of the hardest to break and will not go away on its own. Lets chat about how we can stop our canine from biting behavior for good.

Most dogs especially puppies, love to play around. If you ever watch 2 dogs playing around in the grass together, what are they doing? They are biting each other. Keep in mind that they are not biting to hurt one another, but just gently enough to be playful. Biting other dogs is good and dandy, but when it comes to humans we do not want to allow this kind of play.

Most dogs with biting problems will try to “play” with you by putting your hand in their mouths, and possibly even chewing on it. When this happens, the best thing to do is to grab a toy or something that you can put in their mouths to divert the biting elsewhere. Also, if a dog does start to “play” bite with you, walk away from them. Dogs are very social creatures and they will eventually learn that by biting the play stops. Most dogs will not want the play to stop, so when they are around you again they will not bite in fear that you will walk away from them.

Lastly, if all else fails you must be slightly aggressive with the canine. When they continue to bite your hand give a firm tap underneath the jaw. This will cause slight discomfort in your pet and eventually he will stop biting. If the pet does not respond to a soft tap, increase the force in the tap until it shows results.

Whatever you do, don’t hurt your pet. When all else fails, go to a trained professional to help discipline your dog from their bite problem. Training a dog to stop biting can sometimes be more difficult than it seems.
