Not very long after we got our eight week old puppy it became very apparent we were going to have our work cut out for us. We spent an age searching online for methods to try to stop her from nipping and biting at our hands. We found some great techniques that really worked. Here are the ones that we found the best.

When your cute little pup bites your hand give a “yelp” as if it really hurt. The puppy should respond and stop. If not leave the room for a while. It will quickly associate its behaviour with a negative consequence. Get some playmates for the little rascal. The more a puppy interacts with other dogs and puppies the quicker it will learn what behaviour is acceptable. Other dogs will quickly tell it off if it is being too rough.

Put something like garlic or chili on your hands. The taste will quickly put the puppy off. This is very effective and works very quickly. Toys are very important. As soon as the little monster starts to nip you give it a toy instead. The puppy should be happy with its toy and not your hands.

Exercise. Let your puppy play as often as you can let it. Outdoor access is important. Let the puppy run around as much as possible to tire itself out. A tired puppy is a happy owner. If yelping doesn’t work when your puppy bites you then a deep growl may be more effective. It should react very well to this and be firmly put in its place.

I hope these methods will be of use and will stop your puppy biting. They certainly worked for us.
