Product Description

101 Dog Tricks is the largest trick book on the market and the only one presenting full-color photos of each trick and its training steps? The step-by-step approach, difficulty rating, and prerequisites, allow readers to start training immediately. Tips and trouble-shooting boxes cover common problems, while “build-on” ideas suggest more complicated tricks which build on each new skill. No special tools (such as clickers) or knowledge of specific training methods are required. Trick training is a great way to bond with your dog and help him integrate into your family. It keeps him mentally and physically challenged and helps to establish paths of communication between you. Many tricks build skills needed for common dog sports, dog dancing, and dog therapy work. It’s every dog lover’s privilege that Kyra and Chalcy took time from their performing schedule to share their secrets in 101 Dog Tricks.

I’m so into this book! Beautifully designed, photographed and written, 101 Dog Tricks is perfect for me and my 5-year-old Jack Russell Terrier. Since he was six weeks old, Rocket has been getting by on his cuteness (and very well, I might add). In addition to being physically energetic, he has an active mind and gets bored easily. Kyra Sundance and Chalcy’s wonderful book has given him some fun mental challenges and, as the subtitle says, created a greater bond between us. I highly recommend this book!

I started working with my dog two days ago, using this book. I love it and so, it seems, does my dog. I had tried unsuccessfully to teach her some tricks, but soon just lost interest. Within minutes of using the techniques in this book, I saw progress. She’s already rolling over on her own, with a lure (treat), granted, but that is the successful first step. I expect in a few weeks, she will be doing it on command. We are also working on peek-a-boo and a few others, with great success. I also like that the author includes the training steps for agility, disc dogging, and dog dancing. What fun!101 Dog Tricks: Step by Step Activities to Engage, Challenge, and Bond with Your Dog

The Art Of Raising a Puppy Product Description

The monks of New Skete have been breeding and training dogs at their New York monastery for more than 20 years. Their philosophy of raising dogs accentuates the essential human-canine bond, whereby owners must learn to understand a dog’s instincts, needs, and behavior. Understanding a dog, the monks say, is the key to successfully training him. They first published this philosophy in their 1978 classic guide How to Be Your Dog’s Best Friend

Now the monks concentrate on the first three months of a puppy’s life in The Art of Raising a Puppy.

The book observes a litter of monastery puppies from birth to 12 weeks. Tender photographs and dialogue reflect these precious first few weeks of life. Even at this time, the human-canine link is vital; the monks stress the importance of gentle touch to help forge this connection. Basic puppy training techniques are explored and executed, all of which puppy owners should find easy to implement. Virtually all types of dog problems and dog training are examined in the book, always in compassionate and easily comprehensible language. The monks also look well beyond surface training techniques to analyze the roots of dogs’ problems and explain how training can help. Owners are taught how to gently assert dominance over their dog, which will make for a long-lasting and fulfilling relationship. Beautiful black-and-white photographs of monastery puppies will pull at every heartstring.

Helped us immensely, February 1, 2000
By A Customer This review is from: The Art of Raising a Puppy

My husband and I are new to “puppyhood” and wanted some help. I did some research and was swayed by the reviews of the New Skete Monks’ book. I am very glad I purchased this book. It offered us insight into dog behavior, specifically in regards to living in a pack. We have had our Shepherd/Chow mix puppy for one month and she is wonderful. She’s 10-12 weeks old (we’re not sure) and can sit, lay and roll over on command. We just got her an eight week old playmate on 1-29-00 who is also a Shepherd mix of some kind. We are implementing the techniques we learned from The Art of Raising A Puppy with her as well. I was very nervous about the Chow in our first dog since I was attacked by my brother’s 12 years ago. However, the info on the owner establishing yourself as pack leader was indispensable. I feel more confident in training our dogs and am less fearful of their aggressive behavior when it occurs. I am now going to purchase the New Skete Monks book on How to be Your Dog’s Best Friend. Highly recommend this book.

A must have for the new puppy owner!, October 27, 2009

This review is from: The Art of Raising a Puppy

I’ll keep this short. If you own a puppy you MUST own this book The Art Of Raising a Puppy. It’s a wonderfully entertaining read. Better yet, buy it BEFORE you buy your puppy. Your puppy will thank you for it!

Required reading for all dog owners, September 20, 2009
By Erich “EV” (Western Slope of Colorado, USA) -

This review is from: The Art of Raising a Puppy

This book should be required reading for all potential dog owners regardless of breed, owner age or if you’ve owned a dog before. Clearly written, easy to understand and sensibly presented. The information in this book will give you good insight on how your puppy’s mind works, what your puppy needs from you and why the puppy behaves as it does. Save yourself a lot of grief and aggravation in dealing with easily resolved behavior problems. If you read this book and implement it’s suggestions your dog will grow up being a better companion and you, a better person. Remember, there’s no such thing as a dumb dog – only dumb owners.

I hope this information has been useful, if you liked it, I would be really grateful if you would buy me a coffee to help keep the site running.

How to Raise a Puppy You Can Live With Product Description

The 1981 edition (now out of print) of this little classic on puppy rearing was a word-of-mouth best seller. This revised and expanded edition benefits from an additional decade of observation of puppy behavior by its authors and includes effective, up-to-date methods for educating puppies to become good canine citizens. Along with Job Michael Evans’s The Evans Guide for House training Your Dog (Howell, 1987), this is must have reading for new puppy owners.

GREAT FOR NEW PUPPY PARENTS, November 3, 2009

There’s a volume of good information here. Read the book before

you buy the dog. It will guide you from deciding which breed is right for your family to how to potty train.

Great Reference Book!, September 13, 2009

This review is from:How to Raise a Puppy You Can Live With

I read this book within a few days and it provided me with SO much information! At first I was overwhelmed, but afterwards I felt informed and confident to raise a well-behaved pet. The information is broken down into sections, based on age, which I found very helpful. You can browse back through those chapters periodically as your puppy grows. It also addressed different behaviors and personalities (both in the pup and person) and how training should differ. Overall, very helpful book that I will keep within reach for a while!

Good book for starters…, December 14, 2008

This review is from:How to Raise a Puppy You Can Live With

When I received this book, I realized it was not at all what I had been looking for. This book would have been great, had I bought it before I got my puppy. However, I’d had my little bundle of joy for a few weeks already, and was looking more for potty training, and training in general information. I must admit, I did read it, and learned quite a few new things, especially about behavior. I did skip the first half of the book though, as it did not pertain to us. It talks about how to prepare your home for when you get a puppy, and how to introduce them to the environment. If you haven’t gotten your puppy yet, this is a great first read.

I hope this information has been useful, if you liked it, I would be really grateful if you would buy me a coffee to help keep the site running.
